President
Goodluck Jonathan today commissioned the Abuja intra-city trains as the first
phase of the Abuja Light Rail Project at the Airport Road.
The
train project, which started in 2012 was funded with a $500m loan from the
China EXIM Bank and shall run from Airport Road to Kubwa.
President
Jonathan at the event said that the commissioning was a fulfillment of a
promise his government made to make transportation of people en masse within
the capital city better.
“When we took this loan, we made a promise that we will deliver these trains before the end of our tenure, and I am glad to say that we have delivered.”
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed, under whose ministry the project was executed also spoke,
calling the actualization of the project as a legacy he will leave behind for the residents of Abuja.
The
event was witnessed by top government officials such as the Chairman, Senate
Committee on the FCT, Senator Smart Adeyemi and aides in the presidency.
